About Me

I’m Becca, a former journalist turned creative writer and writing tutor

I’ve been a professional writer since 1987, first freelancing for publications such as City Limits (for anyone old enough to remember), Good Housekeeping, The Independent and a variety of women’s magazines such as 19 and Best. I concentrated on social issues (especially criminal justice) and the arts with a social/political connection. After forays into film-making and criminology (in particular, restorative justice) I returned to writing in 2006, trying my hand at fiction, memoir and other forms of life-writing – some of which you can find on this website.

In 2018 I moved to rural Spain (hence the gorgeous goats in the header image). In 2020 I taught English as a Foreign Language and then developed and delivered my first creative writing course, inspired by the work of some of my favourite authors such as Tim Winton, Kei Miller and Rose Tremain. What a pleasure to introduce my students to them! As we were in lockdown, the classes were delivered on Zoom to people in four countries simultaneously. We bonded as a group, and continue to meet in cyberspace every week.
